I promise, this is the LAST BLOG for Lockwood Interiors

th

After 5 years of blogging and sending monthly email newsletters
for Lockwood Interiors… I promise, this will be the last.

I know. I can’t believe it either. But it’s time to take a final encore. Ok, so perhaps I am being a bit dramatic, because really, Team Lockwood isn’t going anywhere. We are in the final stretch before our launch of DESIGN VISION STUDIO.

More than a name change, this is about staying current and at the top of our field. Quite frankly, we have simply outgrown Lockwood Interiors.

When I started Lockwood Interiors, it was only me-me-me. But now I have an incredible and talented DESIGN TEAM! I am so proud of Kym Carilo and Sarah Rochford for continuing their design education. They have made it possible to become a different and better type of “ONLY.”

Design Vision Studio will be the ONLY award-winning luxury design firm in the western states comprised of a team of professional interior designers who are ALSO uniquely qualified specialists certified in Design Psychology.

So stay tuned… Next month, we will roll out the carpet for a brand new blog featuring our behind-the-scenes Design Vision Stories. We will debut our new website with loads of new project photos. We will be launching a variety of new design services with big plans to improve how we serve our clients!

This is NOT goodbye and we promise we won’t forget you. You will continue to receive our new and improved newsletter from Design Vision Studio. And best yet, we will NOT be changing our VERY POPULAR email policy.

“Marketing experts say we should send more emails.
We disagree and think ONCE-A-MONTH is enough!

Thank you for all of your business and support.

SUNNY DAYS AT SUNNYLANDS
Top 10 reasons to visit

Kym and I had a wonderful opportunity to visit the iconic Sunnyland Estates in Rancho Mirage last month. The mid-century modern architecture and perfectly preserved interiors offers a glimpse into the history of the incredible lives of the late Walter and Lee Annenberg. We recommend that you visit Sunnylands if you have not done so already!

Here are the TOP TEN highlights & insights from our estate tour:

1) The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands offers free admission to the center and gardens and offers many tours to the public.
Our 90 minute, guided tour of the Historic house was a nail-biter for designers who were not allowed to photograph or touch anything.

2) The estate fills 200 acres and sits behind “peach parfait” walls which was Lee’s signature color.
Like most, we’ve been mistakenly calling the wall “pink” for years.

3) The home has 22 guest rooms spread out among the 20,000-square-foot main house and three cottages-all designed by A. Quincy Jones, the master of Southern California modernism.
The Mayan inspired home features a pyramid roof with an egg crate ceiling.

4) The interiors designed and furnished in Hollywood Regency style by William Haines and Ted Graber are kept in perfect time-capsule condition.
Jealousy peaks! If only we could go back in time and be the design team for this once-in-a-lifetime project.

5) Known as the West Coast Camp David, you can walk in the footsteps of noted Hollywood Celebrities, Politicians, World Leaders, Royal Families and other philanthropists and business leaders.
The Room of Memoires gave us goose bumps and was our favorite on the house tour.

6) Sunnylands has housed presidents from eight administrations, including President Obama. Our tour guide said the master bedroom may only be used by the president of the United States.
Our current President only spent the night once and has opted to stay in Thunderbird Estates at the home of his interior designer, Michael S. Smith.
Fun fact: we are currently working with Michael’s relatives.

7) While most of the Annenbergs’ collections of impressive art and antiques still remain in the house, their private collection of Impressionist paintings was donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The home now features digital reproductions impeccably displayed.

8) The official website boasts the “stunning gardens feature 1.25 miles of walking paths that meander through more than 53,000 individual plants and 50 arid-landscape species” designed by Landscape architect James Burnett.
We have now officially deemed the café in the visitor center as being the best place to grab a relaxing cup of coffee.

9) The private golf course features 850 olive trees, 11 artificial fishing lakes and a scattering of sculptures.
The children of the Annenbergs’ family were known to have golf cart races on the grounds when it was still a family home.

10) Sunnylands was created to be “A Place to Change the World.”
It only took a 2 hour visit at Sunnylands to change OUR world.

Kym and I left inspired and smiling. How did we miss this design gem for so many years? We want to thank our design peeps John-Patrick and Francie for the invitation to join them for this tour. The day offered so much more than we ever imagined. We plan to go back soon!

OPRAH gave me a Makeover

Think I was leading a glamorous life as a designer? (HA!) Not even close.
Time got away from me and I found myself in a rut.

I failed to pay attention to the details and make upgrades along the way.
Before I knew it – I lost my way and was overwhelmed.

For anyone who can relate,
I hope my makeover journey will be your inspiration.

Whoever said it’s not the destination.. it’s the journey… lied!

Last year, I was flipping through Oprah Winfrey’s ‘O’ Magazine and came across their section titled “LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE.” This is Oprah’s way of encouraging us to do our best all the time and to accept ourselves when we do. This article caused me to have an “ah-ha” moment. I realized that I was NOT in fact living my best life.

I immediately found myself on a quest for a major makeover in the main areas of my life. These included: my home, my body, my image, and my business. I put the plan in motion with my 48th birthday (this month) as my target date to complete my new goals. I invested both time and money along the way and looking back, I have no regrets.

I am celebrating and determined that “48 is not too late” to live my best life.

I liked my home but was not “in love” with it. I didn’t feel in sync with the style and architecture despite compliments from friends and family. It was time for a change.

I sold my Floating Home in Portland and my La Quinta home and downsized to a house that’s a better fit. My new house (more photos: Arrow Ranch on Houzz) is fun and a bit quirky. I broke design rules and didnt take the “safe” route. It is DARING and yet comfortable. The process was exhausting and time consuming but now that it is over, I am thrilled with the results.

I now live in a home that nourishes my soul and better represents my style and tastes.

As a workaholic, I was so busy running my design business that I was no longer taking care of myself. Long hours of sitting at my desk and eating on the run (topped off with too much soda and coffee) turned me into someone I barely recognized. They say “sitting is the new smoking” and with this analogy I was sitting about two packs a day!

There happened to be a gym (Next Level Fitness) right next door to my office. I signed up for their ‘Fit in 42′ program, and it was the best investment I could have ever made!

I have lost nearly 30 pounds and I am motivated to live a healthier more active lifestyle.

I always thought I’d rather walk on fire than be subject to a fashion makeover. But then I had a chance meeting with Cat Slater (The Fashion Alchemist) who has changed my life.

Cat gently told me the hard truth – that I needed to dress like I could afford my own services! She was telling me that my business wardrobe was all wrong. I had 700 black skirts and 900 black tops. Ok, so I like black! (Plus it’s sliming, see “body makeover” above for why that was important!) I knew Cat had the talent and expertise to help me, but when she told me her fee, I tried not to gulp. I took a leap of faith and started the process of upgrading my business image and add color and style to my wardrobe.

Hiring a professional in an area where I lacked skills has been worth every penny!

As a creative person in the business of design, I am always striving to improve and reach the top of my field. After 16 years dedicated to Lockwood Interiors and its current business model, I found myself ready for new challenges.

I am excited about adding a new division and brand to Lockwood Interiors called Design Vision Studio. This new division will provide expanded packages for interior design services, while continuing to provide the exceptional customer service that our clients have come to expect.

Stay tuned… Design Vision Studio will be launching soon!

I AM MY OWN WORST CLIENT

I hate to admit… I am my own worst client.

When you choose to work with an Interior Designer, you are working with a design expert who has talent, education and experience in their field.

I’m often reminding my clients to “trust the process” and go with our vision, selections, and design decisions. After all, you choose Lockwood Interiors because you have viewed our projects online and liked what you saw.

LockwoodInteriorsDesignBlogPost

I know it sounds a lot easier than it is because I have my own issues with trusting experts. For instance, when I go to the hairdresser I bombard her with pictures of haircuts and a diatribe of details that I want.

She’s patient and she listens to me, but at some point, I have to sit back, relax, be quiet (hence the gag) and turn the scissors over to her. Sometimes I even make her job harder than it should be because I’ve given myself a little unauthorized trim. So believe me – I get it!

Keep in mind that even a small change can make a big difference in the outcome.

Here’s an analogy: what if you were having surgery… would you tell the Doctor how to do their job? Would you suggest which instrument they use? Would you really want to stay awake to participate? No, you have to breathe in the happy gas and let the professional do their job because you want the intended results.

Unfortunately, when I graduated from design school I was not given a license to prescribe anesthesia to my clients. So you’re just going to have to trust us without the sedatives!

Leave the worry and decision making to us; we promise you won’t be disappointed!

Thank you for being such a good sport!

TAKE A LEAP THIS YEAR WITH DESIGN

WE KNOW HOW TO TURN THAT UGLY PROPERTY INTO A DREAM
AND IT STARTS WITH A PLAN

Initially, some of our clients might not understand the value of hiring Lockwood Interiors; but once they see the results they know they’ve made the right decision. We understand this process requires a leap of faith – and we’re not trying to sound arrogant – but we believe we’re worth it.

Most of our clients have experience implementing design projects over a period of time. If you have never experienced tackling an entire room (or house) all at once, you may find yourself overwhelmed and undecided on where to begin.

There is an abundance of DIY design info out there with TV, Magazines and the Internet. You’ve tried to take it all in and follow the instructions, yet you still feel like your trying to find your way around Los Angeles with a map of Vancouver.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a PLAN that works as a road map for your project?

This is the reason we start with a detailed, personalized Conceptual Design Plan for our clients. So what is a design plan? We create a big binder (lovingly referred to as “design bible”) filled with all the details needed to help make the right decisions throughout your project.

It includes a basic computerized floor plan (to illustrate the space planning and best furniture layout for the room) and a computerized design “vision board” where we have narrowed down thousands of choices to the selections we are proposing for each room or area.

Kym and I have over 40 years of combined experience specializing in whole home transformations and they all start with a CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PLAN.

Below is an example of the floor plan, design vision board and before & after photos of a recent project that we think will knock your socks off.

This remarkable transformation started with wonderful clients who saw the potential in this “ugly duckling” of a home. They took a LEAP OF FAITH with Lockwood Interiors and worked with us to bring our design vision to life.

What our Clients are saying….

Patricia Lockwood of Lockwood Interiors is absolutely amazing! Patricia recently redesigned our kitchen and her vision resulted in the TOTAL transformation of our inefficient closed-in design, to a beautiful open and efficient floor plan.

We not only gained the functionality that we needed but also gained the “wow factor” from the moment you enter our home. The redesign of our kitchen made us feel like we gained a new house. Patricia has an eye for design that makes you excited to see her vision become reality. We were excited about her design but the final product was so much more than we imagined.

This has been our fourth project with Lockwood Interiors and each project has exceeded our expectations. We can’t thank Lockwood interiors enough and we will certainly use Patricia and her team for any of our future home design needs.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT US….

My husband and I just completed gutting, re-designing and furnishing our 1800 sq. ft. home in Palm Desert. We hired Patricia and Kym based on recommendations we read on the Internet. We interviewed them on the phone and went with our instincts! We were not misguided.

They came up with the entire new floor plan, suggested an awesome contractor and guided us through the selection of colours, fabrics, flooring, tiling, accessories and every other necessity that comes with doing an entire home.

They were always open to hearing our views and suggestions and many times re-iterated that this was “our” home, not theirs.

The project came in on budget and within the time frame quoted. As we were not present for much of the construction and finishing of this project, Patricia and Kym were instrumental in making sure the project went forward in a timely manner and regularly checked up on the job. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

BLAH to SPA – Master Bath Transformation

A small investment with Lockwood Interiors sure goes a long way!

Not only has this master bathroom been completely renovated and updated, the design gives the impression that the bathroom is actually larger than the original. This, despite the fact that a luxurious tub was added and the footprint of the shower was extended. The ceiling soffits and a false angled wall were removed to give the illusion of more space and to bring in additional natural light from the existing skylights. The high gloss, wood-looking porcelain tile makes a bold statement. These tiles were installed wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling to create the biggest impact. Exquisite lighting, frameless glass shower enclosure, quartz countertops, painted cabinetry, and brilliant brushed bronze fixtures complete this timeless design.

FANS are great… but CLIENTS are better!

Marketing Ninjas
say we should send more emails and we have less than three seconds to make an impression. For us, it’s not how many impressions we make – it’s more a goal to make lasting impressions.

So we want to take this moment to thank you for your business and support. We appreciate you so much that we refuse to fall-in-line with these so-called marketing experts and bombard you with e-mails.

Instead, we choose to focus on actual relationships. We do our best to keep up in the tech world but our priority is to spend our time designing and providing customer service to our clients.

We can relate to “O.O.S.” (online overload syndrome.) Our newest pet-peeve involves visiting websites and then our intended search immediately halted by a pop-up window. This frustrating obstacle generally promises a coupon or a discount of some kind. But the real truth is that it feels more like an invitation to be stalked in your inbox and social media feed.

So rest assured, Lockwood Interiors will remain “low-key” in our web presence and you can choose to follow Lockwood Interiors (or not) with no pressure. We totally understand. Just know that we absolutely will not to sell or share your contact information and we rarely stray from the time-table listed below.

Like every worthwhile investment, great Interior Design comes with a price. The excitement of the “PRETTY” sometimes makes you forget a little thing called the budget.

Most of our clients have lived in homes where their purchases were made slowly over a period of time. If you have never experienced purchasing an entire room (or house) all at once, you may experience a bit of “STICKER SHOCK.” We can guide you through this process and help you make the best choices for your home… and your wallet.

It is very important to develop at least a general idea of how much you want to spend on your project before getting started. Knowing your budget will help prioritize your wish list and deliver the best version of your dream space within a “REALISTIC” budget.
